IGGERS DIGEST | Mac's Fish & Chips: Tin Fish without the view - or the wait.

Mac's Fish & Chips reminds me just a bit of Tin Fish - a favorite of mine - only without the spectacular view of Lake Calhoun, and without the wait. Okay, the menu is pretty limited, but, like Tin Fish, what they do, they do very well. You get your choice of halibut, walleye, cod, shrimp, clam or chicken strips, breaded and deep-fried, available as a sandwich, a basket with fries, or just by itself.

Shown here is the cod value basket, $6.35, with a side of coleslaw (75 cents). Other available sides include deep fried cheese curds ($2.75) and poutine - cheese curds and fries smothered in brown gravy ($3.75). A piece of homemade saltwater taffy is included with every order, and also for sale by the bag.

The original Mac's at 1330 Larpenteur in St. Paul has been around since 1991, but they recently opened a second location at 610 W. 54th in Minneapolis. Wine and beer are available only at the Minneapolis location.

Mac's Fish and Chips has its own YouTube channel, with a series of funny videos - sort of like mini-documentaries, where they demonstrate the preparation of their speciaties. Like this one:
